In N.E. corner of N.W.1/4 of Sec.17, T28N, R1E., 2nd Ind., P.M. in N.W. HARRISON Township of N.W. CASS County in N.C. INDIANA.

Cemetery lies E.S.E. & S. of the Indian Creek Christian [Disciples of Christ] Church with a new cemetery-addition opened west of the church. Cemetery is in the town of LUCERNE , IN., where State Highway 16 [Monon-to-Huntington] Road is crossed by the [ Logansport-to-South Bend ] tracks of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Go W. on Hwy. 16 for 2 miles & N. 1 mile to reach the cemetery which is 4 miles E-N.E. of Royal Center, IN.

Caution: This cemetery should not be confused with the still larger Indian Creek Presbyterian Cemetery in this same township that is only 1 mile further N.E. & for which a separate report has been filed with the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, IN.

About 1907, Dr. J. Z. Powell, late historian of Cass Co., IN informed by residents of this area that the first person buried here, lies in an unmarked grave “Mrs.[?] Irvin d.1857. Note that at least 3 other unmarked graves in this location are older than that listed by Powell but it’s possible that those were moved here at a date after 1907 from another cemetery.

Also: can  Powell have meant  Emma Jane Cast 1860   instead of Edmond J?

Also: Susan [Mrs. John Burton] 1863 not same as we recorded.

Fieldwork was originally done on this cemetery Sunday, August, 16, 1942 by

Robert B. Whitsett, Jr. of the Cemetery Research Committee  of the

Editorial Comment: at junction of Hwy’s 16 & 17 & E. of Lucerne is little hamlet of Lease’s Corner. This lady “Cora Fay Lease was likely of the family of whom this place was named.
