A-Z

South part of S.W. 1/4, Section 13, near the E.edge of NOBLE Township , CASS County , INDIANA .  About 1 1/2 mile N. of the present extreme N. edge of the City of Logansport . 340 ft. (20 rods) of State Highway 17 [Logansport-Plymouth] this is N. extension of Logansport ’s N. 3rd St. , formerly “Pleasant Grove [or Kewanna] Pike.”

Cemetery’s on what for generations was known as the “ARNET SHIELDS FARM, but is now an island like grove surrounded by the grounds of the Cass County Chapter of the Isaac Walton League. The cemetery’s N.W. corner being about 390 ft. S.E. of the 1940’s club house.

In Kingman’s 1878 Atlas of Cass County, when N.3rd St. was known as Sycamore St . , the old “Pleasant Grove Pike” passed just west of this Old Pioneer cemetery but Pike was then re-routed to follow line between sections 13 & 14 of T.27N, R 1 E.

To not confuse this cemetery with another similar one in the immediate neighborhood [Horney], let it be known that SHIELDS lies south of the inlet of a small artificial lake called “The Pool or Big Pond”, which forms an important part of the conservation clubs tract [38.61]acres.

Rectangular in shape, the cemetery measures 121.5 ft. E-W & 75 ft. N-S. It is thankfully maintained by the devoted descendants of those Pioneers who rest here.

Editorial Notes;

Joshua Shields was born in Knox Co., TN, where he married that famous Indiana Pioneer public servant [John Tipton’s] sister Rhoda Tipton who also was born in TN. It was this Mrs. Rhoda Tipton Shields who personally selected this beautiful spot north of Logansport for the family burial ground before her death in 1837. She and her husband Joshua & 13-year-old son Arnet Shields had come here in 1829 from Harrison County , IN , where Joshua & Rhoda had established themselves in 1808? and where in 1816 Arnet was born. See Kingman Bros. Atlas (1878) of Cass Co., IN pp.40-1

Note: there is some discrepancy in at least one of the dates.

Historian Dr. J.Z. Powell, who was reared in a nearby township & who visited this cemetery in 1906/07 says “George Smith, a soldier was buried in this cemetery.
