Smith
Private Burial Place
"On
what has been known as the Samuel Horn farm, but formerly owned by Judge John
Smith, situated in the northeast corner of section 20, Clay Township, was a
family burial ground. Judge John Smith, father of Benj. H. Smith, lived here at
the time of his death and was buried on his farm, March 18, 1845. Also,
Charlotte, his wife, and marble slabs marked their graves for many years, but in
recent years the remains have been removed to the Leroy Fitch lot in Mt. Hope,
and the original old marble slab lies upon the grave, from which we copy the
inscription:
"Judge
John Smith, died March 18, 1846, age seventy seven."
The
original graves are abandoned and given over to the plowman."
