TROUTMAN BURIAL GROUND

Aka

“Old Providence - Old School Baptist Church Society’s Cemetery.” Used for burials as early as 1840 but not legally designated as such until 4-20-1847. N.W 1/4 Section 29, Township 28 N, Range 2 W.,  BETHLEHEM Township , CASS County , INDIANA .

Completely abandoned for burials & all remains removed to other cemeteries on Nov.13th & 14th, 1914 by the late Dr. Jehu Z. Powell of Logansport [who was a grandson of  James Troutman]: and Orlando Powell, and George A. Troutman. Although this present report is dated 10-23-1940, fieldwork for this cemetery was done many years ago[1907-1914] by Dr. J. Z. Powell [1848-1918], now long deceased.

Transcriber Note: R.B.W.Jr. commented in this description that those whom J.Z.Powell were not related to were distinguished in Red ink below. However that information is lost to us as ink colors were not transferred with the microfilming process. Also, the old type-writers often missed [skipped letter or left only portions of a letter]making impossible & difficult to fully transcribe this document.

Veal Children & Mrs. Hurst: Their bones turned to dust so that it was futile & so were left at the site.

Remainder of the deceased, (except as noted,) were removed to Fletcher’s Lake Methodist Church cemetery in Fulton County , IN , beside the grave of Nancy [Mrs. James] Troutman.

This report was virtually made posthumously by Dr. J.Z. Powell; for, being deeply interested in this little cemetery [which contained the remains of his forbearers & other relatives.]  He went to great pains concerning it & from about 1907-1914 assembled a mass of data which is precisely the sort of information needed in compiling, for the Indiana Historical Society. For this report, the compiler has done little more than selectively copy & arranges names, dates, other data which was assembled by Dr. Powell at a time when the stones were still here & discernable.
