TWELLS PRIVATE FAMILY-CEMETERY

Decades 1870-1890

The Twells family cemetery has been abandoned & vacated, moving all grave remains from here to Mt. Hope cemetery, [4-5 miles N.W.] at Logansport.  It’s improbable, though possible that some family members, relatives, employees, etc could still have remains buried in this cemetery of unmarked graves. The present owner & tenant were unaware that there had ever been a cemetery located on this farm.

Directions: Taking 18th St. S. from Logansport & crossing the 18th St. Bridge [2 1/4 miles S.] over the Wabash River The Morgan Hill Rd. is a paved extension of 18th St. going E. & cemetery is less than 1/4 mile E. on Morgan Hill Rd. to the Shadylawn Farm on the east side of Morgan Hill Rd. The cemetery is on a slightly elevated spot about 50 rods east of the barnyard & (yellowish colored) framed barn. Cemetery is nearly 1/4 mile W.N.W. of the large Washington Township Consolidated School & about 65 rods N. of the E/W paved Hwy. where the school is located & separates the S.W. 1/4 of section 7 from the N.E. 1/4 of section 18. Between the cemetery site & the school is the home of Raymond Snyder which lies on the N. side of the E/W Hwy. & is about 50 rods E.S.E. of the cemetery site. Cemetery site is near the E. edge of the W. 1/2 of the S.E. 1/4 of Section 7, T. 26 N., R.2 E., 2nd Ind. P.M. & in the N.E. 1/4 of the S.W. 1/4 of the said S.E. 1/4 of said Section 7, in N-Central WASHINGTON Township, Of S-Central CASS County, IN

The farm was purchased by James Nells from Jacob C. Lyons [1866] but was on March 28, 1941 owned by Joe Minnick of Logansport & occupied by a tenant. The farm was also known in latter years as the Gottlieb Schaeffer Farm.

An estimable & dependable elderly lady living 1/2 mile S.E., Mrs. W. D. Condon, distinctly remembers attending funeral at this cemetery as a young girl & vividly recalls the processions leading eastward from the barnyard.

Site reveals only small fragments of cement, marble & limestone & slight elevation on almost a perfectly level farm.

The City of Logansport seems to be silent as to the date of the disinterment’s & removals, but a visit was made to the lot of the TWELLS family branch interred in Mt. Hope cemetery. Five uncommonly thick old slabs were copied from Lot 56 O.P. lies 100 ft. N.E. of big Soldiers & Sailors Monument near main entrance.
