5 WITNESSES TELL CORONER THEY SAW CAR

Inquest in the Death of Pedestrian Friday Night Opened By Dr. Stewart Today.

Officers today are on the lookout for the driver of a small coupe believed to have been the machine operator whose car struck and fatally injured John Frank Reeser, 61, on Erie avenue near Thirteenth street Friday night. The search started following the presentation of testimony at the inquest opened by Coroner M. B. Stewart as given by members of a train crew who were on their way home and heard the crash but did not see the accident. The railroad men stated that the crash was heard after a small cope was seen to speed east on Erie avenue past Thirteenth street. This small car was more than a block in advance of the taxicab driven by Paul Lavere who was held as an important witness for the coroner. The testimony today practically removed any suspicions that the taxicab might have struck the aged shop worker.

Exonerates Others

The three giving the evidence on which the search for the coupe driver is being based were Robert Schwartz, 1931 Spear street; J. C. Schaefer [?], 1800 George street; and Barnabus Dean, 1318 North street. Others who testified in the morning session of the inquest were Carl Turnpaugh, 920 Sixteenth street; Patrick Grady, this city; R. C. Yost and Vernie Ramey, of Lafayette the crew of the Interurban which carried the injured man to the Interurban station following the accident.

The testimony, as given this morning plainly showed that neither an interurban or streetcar was near the scene of the accident at the time of the crash and that neither could have been implicated.

[?] M. Wall, prosecuting attorney attended a portion of the hearing. Mahoney and Mahoney were present together with J. H. Robertson, claim agent of the Indiana Service corportion representing that firm. Attorney R. C. Hillis appeared as attorney for the taxicab company whose driver was held. The three sons of Reeser attended also.

The inquest is not expected to be completed this afternoon. Lavere was scheduled to be one of the early witnesses at the afternoon session.

CORONER WILL HOLD REESER PROBE OPEN FOR SEVERAL DAYS

The inquest into the death of John Frank Reeser, fatally injured when he was struck by an auto Friday night while walking in Erie avenue Friday night will be held open for several days to permit the introduction of further witnesses. In the meantime officers are on the lookout for the lone driver of a small coupe, who is believed to have struck the aged shop worker while he was wending his way home over the slippery streets. The witnesses testified before Coroner M. B Stewart Tuesday, all of which evidence strengthened the belief of the investigation that Reeser had been knocked down by a "hit and run" driver.

Paul Levere, who was held as a witness for the coroner, was released after he gave his testimony Tuesday afternoon. Evidence collected by officers practically exonerates Levere from any liability in the accident.
