Miami County Landowners in 1877

This is an extract from plat maps in the 1877 Kingman Atlas of Miami County, Indiana. Landowners in towns and villages are NOT included in this extract.

The Miami County Genealogical Society had the book, Combination Atlas Map of Miami County Indiana, Compiled Drawn and Published From Personal Examinations and Surveys by 1877, by the Kingman Brothers, for sale at a very reasonable price. The atlas contains a history of each of the townships of Miami county, plat maps, some drawings of people and their homes, and many names of early settlers. This atlas is now out of print. The Miami County Genealogical Society is preparing to publish a reprint of another atlas of Miami Co., reprinted from an original 1866 atlas.

Once you know just where your ancestor lived, much more information will become possible. With the help of an old plat map and more modern maps, you'll be able to find out if your ancestor's home is still standing and maybe even visit the spot where they lived. The old map will give you an idea of where your ancestor may have gone to church, what school they may have attended, or where they may have been buried. A close look at nearby properties may give you some insight into your ancestor's life.

Maybe, when your relative was a small child, he ate plums from his next-door neighbors' plum grove, went swimming in the spring at the back of the family property, or explored in a nearby dangerous marsh. Perhaps as an adult he picked up a little extra money working at a nearby sawmill or tile factory.
