Nancy A. Wilson, 70, Peru, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004 at Dukes Continuing Care Center, Peru.
She was born Aug. 5, 1934 in Peru to Bertie Coiner and Harry Brownlee Sr. She married Donald A. Wilson March 27, 1954, and he preceded her in death April 27, 1991.
Wilson was formerly employed at LoBill Foods deli and she was a homemaker. She also was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Chumbley and husband Mike, Ruth Oaks and husband Rowdy, all of Peru, and Karen Bessell and husband Bruce, Coverdale; ten grandchildren, Elaine, Mike and Joseph Chumbley, Roy, Adam and Emily Oaks, Jessica and Christina Bessell, and Jeremy and Theresa Schram; and a sister-in-law, Sarah Brownlee, Peru.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Harry Brownlee; and a daughter, Evelyn Schram.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, Peru, with Pastor Robert Adelsperger officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Londa Lucille Murphy Kuhn, 81
Londa Lucille Murphy Kuhn, 81, Denver, Ind., passed away at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, Peru.
She was born Feb. 25, 1923 in Miami County to Clinton T. and Jettie A. Harper Murphy. She was married to Virgil DeVirle Kuhn Dec. 24, 1941 at her parents’ home by the Rev. Ray Kuhn. He preceded her in death July 27, 1995.
Mrs. Kuhn was a lifetime member of the Denver Baptist Church and a member of the Missionary Society, a 50-year member of Macy Chapter 124 Order of the Eastern Star, Macy, and a cook for 18 years at North Miami High School.
Survivors include a son, Larry E. Kuhn and wife Lana, Denver, Ind.; three grandsons, Michael Kuhn and wife Carmen, Peru, Miles Kuhn and wife Lavonna, West Lafayette, and Mason Kuhn, Denver, Ind.; five great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Alex, Olivia, Benjamin and Bryce; two sisters, Rosemary Hardt and husband Chuck, Logansport, and Vernice Burke, Saratoga, Wyo.; and a brother, Nordan Murphy and wife Donna, New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Elvin Murphy.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, with the Rev. Mark Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Logansport. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Denver Baptist Church Building Fund.

Joyce Belle Sheppard, 73, Wabash died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2004, in Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born August 24, 1930 in Peru, to Gaylord Floor and Georgetta Correll Floor Landgrave.
She married William F. Sheppard on March 20, 1948 in Wabash. He survives. They lived at 3462 S. Bailey Road, Wabash, until recently relocating to Miller’s Merry Manor.
She retired from B. Walter and Co. in 1982 after 17 years. She was a long-time member of the Wabash Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her husband; her son, Rex A. Sheppard, Wabash; her daughter, Lorraine Powell and husband, John, Indianapolis; her granddaughter, Tiffany Powell, Indianapolis; her grandson, Cory Sheppard of Wabash; four sisters, Peggy Floor, Wabash, Norma Bernard and husband, Jerry, Carmel, Carolyn Langan and husband, George, Clovis, NM, Judy Blackman and husband, Bob, Peru; her brother, Gaylord Floor and wife, Beth, Peru; two half-sisters, Jackie Waite, Somerset and Rhonda Rathbum and husband, Clarence, Wabash.
She was preceded in death by one son.
Funeral services will be at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Ave. Chapel, at 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 25. Pastor Tim Prater and Rev. David Edwards will officiate. Entombment will be in the Chapel of Remembrance Mausoleum at Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Alice Elizabeth "Bettie" Sutton, 78
Alice Elizabeth "Bettie" Sutton, 78, Deedsville, passed away at 1:29 a.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born in Noble Township, Cass County, Indiana, on June 22, 1926, to John and Elizabeth Miller Overmeyer. She married Robert L. Sutton in Peru, and he survives.
A graduate of Twelve Mile High School, she was a member of the Deedsville United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was currently attending the Grass Creek United Methodist Church, in Grass Creek, Indiana.
Survivors other than her husband, include her five children: Dennis Sutton, Peru; Robert Sutton, Jr., North Manchester; Linda Marlow, New Castle; Jody See, Delong; and Kathy Enyeart, Deedsville; two sisters, Myrtle McKeever, Flora; and Norma Jean Mitchum, Winter Park, Fla.; two brothers, John Overmeyer, Logansport, and Benjamin Overmeyer, Texas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Monday, July 19, 2004, at the Deedsville United Methodist Church, with Pastors Ron Vititoe and Bill Babb officiating. Burial will follow in the Deedsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Friends may call on Sunday, 1-3 p.m., and 6-8 p.m., at McClain Funeral Home, Denver.

William “Allen” Fodge, 46, Peru, passed away at 12:29 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2004 at Dukes Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 18, 1958 in Peru to Harold Fodge, Sr. and Jean Ann (Martin) Fodge Wildrick.
Fodge married Deborah K. Garrett on April 23, 1988, and was retired from Hayes-Lemmerz in Wabash.
He served in the National Guard for 15 years and was a member of the Parkview United Methodist Church and Eagles Lodge.
Fodge is survived by two sons, Matthew Garrett, Denver, Colo., and Jeffrey Fodge, Peru; one daughter, Caitlyn Fodge, Peru; three brothers, Steven Fodge, Seattle, Harold Fodge, Jr. and Robert Shadel, both of Phoenix; and one sister, Betty Green, Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Dennis Fodge.
Funeral services will be conducted at Parkview United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday with Pastor Ken Walker officiating.
Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home.

John C. Baumiller, 77, formerly of Peru, passed away Monday, August 23, 2004 at his residence in Cumberland, Maryland.
Baumiller was born on August 5, 1927 in Baltimore to William and Gladys (Zizwark) Baumiller.
He was retired from Chessie System, and had served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Baumiller was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Chief Justice Taney Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, active member of Pope John XXIII Knights of Columbus, American Red Cross Disaster Services, a volunteer with Maryland State Police, Sacred Heart Hospital, and the Meals on Wheels program.
He is survived by his wife, Ann (Passarell) Baumiller; two daughters, Kim Hagan and husband Dan, Ridley Township, Pa., and Trish Van Baalen and husband David, Peru; three sons, John R. Baumiller, Thoroughfare, N.J., William J. Baumiller and wife Betty J., Cincinnati, and Joseph J. Baumiller and wife Lynette, Kempton, Ind.; one brother, William Baumiller; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Baumiller was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters.
At Mr. Baumiller’s request his body will be cremated.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Father James Kurtz, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.
The family requests memorial contributions to the American Red Cross, 400 Cumberland St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

Phyllis Elizabeth Ege, 89
Phyllis Elizabeth Ege, 89, formerly of Denver and Peru, passed away at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Carmel Care Center, Carmel.
She was born on September 10, 1914 in Miami County to Hugh and Fannie (Myers) Wray. She married Leonard F. Ege on March 5, 1939 in Mexico by Reverend Frank Fisher.
Ege is survived by one daughter, Rita Ann Myers and husband Marland, Indianapolis; two grandsons, Kevin J. Myers, Lafayette, and Rodney A. Myers, Indianapolis; two great-grandchildren, Charles Anthony Myers and Suzanne M. Myers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, H. Fred Wray; and one sister, Evelyn Bonney.
Ege was a member of the Mexico Church of the Brethren, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, and belonged to the Ladies Fellowship.
She was employed as a cook for the North Miami School Corporation for several years, and retired from Sherrill Corporation in 1982.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at the Mexico Church of the Brethren at 11 a.m. with Pastor Todd Wenger officiating.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Mexico.
Visitation will be at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, from 4 to 8 p.m. on today.
Warren Rex Garner, 72

Warren Rex Garner, 72, Converse, passed away at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004 at his residence.
He was born Nov. 24, 1931 in Converse to Ledford and Angeline Swetman Garner. He graduated from Swayzee High School in 1949, and married Mary Louise Hendricks Sept. 1, 1956 at St. Charles Church, Peru. She preceded him in death Feb. 17, 2001.
Garner worked for 15 years as a livestock buyer, 31 years as a school bus driver for Oak Hill United School Corporation, and 31 years as a custodian for Converse Church of Christ, of which he also was a member. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He received several military decorations, including the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the National Defense Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.
He also was a devoted draft horse and draft pony enthusiast, 44-year member of the Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of America, 25-year member of the Percheron Horse Association, lifetime honorary member of the American Draft Pony Association and the founder of the Indiana Draft Pony Association of Indiana.
Survivors include two daughters, Vickie Stout, Wabash, and Patty Hagan and husband Jeff, Converse; a son, Mike Garner and wife Sherry, La Fontaine; a granddaughter, Danielle Stout, Wabash; and a grandson, Dustin Stout, Wabash.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Park Lawn Cemetery, with Bruce Cameron officiating. Garner will be transported to the cemetery by his draft ponies. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Amboy. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Draft Pony Youth Fund, 9621 Overly Road, Frederickstown, OH 43019. Arrangements are being handled by Laird Funeral Home, Amboy.
Donald “Flip” Phillipy, 75
Donald “Flip” Phillipy, 75, Weaver, Ga., formerly of Peru, passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta at 9:21 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2004.
He was born in Peru, Ind. on June 4, 1929 to George M. and Agnes L. Shauman Phillipy. On Aug. 28, 1963, he married Mildred Oldham, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 19, 1991.
Phillipy was a U.S. Army veteran, and was retired from the C & O Railroad.
Survivors include three sons, Terry Phillipy and wife Nancy, Elizabethtown, Ky., David Fansler and wife Dori, Weaver, Ala., and Bill Fansler, Peru; two brothers, Lenard Phillipy, Kokomo, and Mack Phillipy, Peru; two sisters, Dorothy Phillipy, Peru, and Mary Jane Gearhart, Akron; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and two sisters.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reyburn Cemetery, with Chaplain Steve Fleck officiating. There will be no visitation. A military committal service will be conducted by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Arrangements are by Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, Peru.

Charlotte L. Hartzler, 90, Hickory Creek Health Care, Rochester, formerly of Gilead and Akron, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004 at her residence.
She was born Dec. 17, 1913 in Miami County to Clarence and Lucy Birke Bowman. She married Russell “Bob” Hartzler Oct. 1, 1938 in Rochester, and he preceded her in death Sept. 27, 1990.
She was a homemaker, enjoyed her flowers while living on the farm and while living in town.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Jones and husband Garrell, Akron, and Connie Fooshee, Peru; a son, Kenny Hartzler and wife Claudia Sue, Akron; four grandchildren, Staci, Shawnitia, Robert and Devin; four step-grandchildren, Debbie, Gary, Sandy and David; a sister, Betty Richardson, Peru; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Birk Bowman.

Jerry D. Spencer, 57, Caring Hands, Peru, passed away at 12:40 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at his residence.
He was born Nov. 3, 1946 in Peru to Chester Orville and Ida Spencer. He was in the U.S. Marines, and worked for Bryan Steam 25 years.
Survivors include three sons, Jeff Hartleroad, Tennessee, Jerry S. Spencer, Peru, and Chris Spencer, Mexico; a daughter, Joy Lynn Hagan, Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Bill Spencer, Seattle, Wash., and Donald Spencer, Peru; four sisters, Mary Kay Shaw, Lorean Brown and Barb Heeter, all of Peru, and Thelma Miles, Alabama; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Charles A. Barr, 52, Peru, passed away at 11:35 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born Feb. 25, 1952 in Peru to Paul E. and Eviral (Christy) Barr. He married Mary Mongosa Feb. 2, 1988, and she survives.
Barr enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include a daughter, Brandi Barr, Peru; a grandson, Tristain Gibson, Peru; several nieces and nephews; a step-son, David A. Fodge and wife Monica, Peru; three brothers, Ralph Barr and wife Jean, and Don Barr and wife Sondra, all of Peru, and Albert Eugene Barr, Richvalley; and two sisters, Roberta Johnson and Lucille Robertson, both of Peru.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law and a nephew.

Pamela “Pam” Sue Hannigan, 45, Peru, passed away at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at her residence.
She was born April 2, 1959 in Leavenworth, Kan. to Mary Helen Friele and Louis Parr. She married David Brian Hannigan Oct. 12, 1979, and he survives.
Hannigan was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include two sons, Brian J. “B.J.” and Ian M. Hannigan, both of Peru; a daughter, Leah Myers and husband Steven “Brice,” Peru; a grandson, Brayden Myers; and two sisters, MaryAnn Thornton, Leavenworth, Kan., and Kathleen Hayes, Fort Wayne.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Jean Ellen Behny Tomson, 80, Wabash, passed away at 5:10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2004 at Wabash Skilled Care Center.
She was born March 7, 1924 in Peru to Floyd and Lois Judy Behny. She married former Wabash County Sheriff, Howard S. Tomson, Oct. 22, 1944 in Royal Center. He preceded her in death March 24, 1985.
Tomson was a lifetime member of Bachelor Creek Church of Christ, a former Wabash County Jail matron, a member of the Wabash County Farm Bureau and member and past-president of Tri-Township Home Ec Club. She loved NASCAR racing, IU basketball, Cubs baseball and needle craft.
Survivors include two sons, David Tomson and wife Brenda, Urbana, and Denny Tomson and wife Jeni, Wabash; a daughter, Pamela Tomson, Wabash; two sisters, Mary Powell and husband Robert, Peru, and Dorothy Shields and husband Donald, Monticello; two grandsons, Nathan Tomson, Mount Pleasant, Mich., and Michael Tomson and wife Christina, Urbana; two granddaughters, Lori Acton and husband Jaison, Franklin, and Tiffany Barton and husband Dan, Andrews; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Acton, Franklin; and a step-great-grandson, Austin Sawvel, Warsaw.
She was preceded in death by a step-father, Ray Miller; and a half-brother, Michael J. Miller.

Douglas R. Coble, 47
Douglas R. Coble, 47, Idaville, passed away at 11:35 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
He was born Aug. 4, 1957 in Bainbridge, Md. to Ralph Coble and Dorothy Emme. He graduated from Twin Lakes High School in 1976, and attended Ivy Tech, studying building trades.
As a young boy, Coble was in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He worked for Quality Communications, Wabash, for over 15 years. He was a member of the Sons of AMVETS Post 91, Monticello, and loved fishing, hunting, the outdoors, horses, donkeys, collecting antiques, singing and doing karaoke. He also was a carpenter, had a beautiful rose garden and loved flowers.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Ralph Coble and wife Dixie, Monticello; his mother and step-father, Dorothy Emme and husband Kenneth, Monticello; a buddy and child of the heart, Alex Ropp; three sisters, Sharon Williams and husband Bob, Monticello, Lisa Farney and husband Larry, Wolcott, and Cindy Jones and husband Bill, Kansas; a brother, Kevin Coble, Burnettsville; a step-sister, Cassy Davenport and husband Dean, Logansport; and several nieces and nephews.

John B. Radel Jr., 65, Peru, passed away at 2:19 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born April 21, 1939 in Peru to Ella Biggs and John Radel Sr. He married Janice Mooney Feb. 8, 1964, and she preceded him in death May 11, 1992.
Radel retired from NIPSCO, was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge, Peru Maennerchor and the United Steel Workers Union. He also was in the U.S. Navy four years.
Survivors include his mother in Peru; a son, Michael Todd Radel and wife Angela, Peru; a daughter, Mary Beth Thayer and husband Mike, Peru; three grandchildren, Ciara and Alyssa Radel, and Tyler Thayer; a brother, Gerald Radel, Denver; three brothers-in-law, Chuck Mooney and wife Joan, Dan Mooney and wife Carol, and Rick Mooney and wife Sally, all of Peru; and two sisters-in-law, Connie and Ginny Mooney, both of Peru.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his father; two sisters-in-law, Myra Radel and Mona Mooney; and three brothers-in-law, Tom, Dick and Larry Mooney.

Dora E. Payne, 82
Dora E. Payne, 82, Peru, passed away at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004 at Dukes Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 6, 1922 in Peru to Harry Sylvester and Eva Wilson Biddle. She married Donald L. Payne in 1944, and he preceded her in death June 14, 1992.
Payne graduated from Peru High School in 1940 and Manchester College in 1944. She was retired teacher and a member of the Retired Teachers Association, having taught 42 years in the Erie Township and Peru Community School system. She also was a member of the Erie United Methodist Church, the Gideons and the Richland Home Builders Home Ec Club.
Survivors include a son, David Payne and wife Barbara, Peru; a daughter, Sharon Mowrer and husband Tim, Fort Wayne; and five grandchildren, Stephanie and Andrew Mowrer, Nicholas Payne and wife Melissa, and Sarah and Mandy Payne.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Charles W. Sumpter, 84
Charles W. Sumpter, 84, Amboy, died at 4:18 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Howard Regional Hospital, Kokomo.
He was born in Converse, Oct. 10, 1919, to Clarence W. and Hallie Harvey Sumpter. He married Katherine Venis in Marion on March 3, 1941. She survives.
He was employed as a civil engineer in water treatment at Grissom Air Force Base. He retired in 1978.
He attended Peru High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His decorations include EAME Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the World War II Victory Medal. He was also a recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds taken in action on Jan. 5 in France, 1945. He was taken Prison Of War by the Germans, where he was held until being liberated by the Allied Forces.
He loved crossword puzzles, sports on television, and most of all his church, the Amboy United Methodist Church, where he held various offices and was a lay leader for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Sumpter, Converse; his son, Kent Sumpter and wife, Jan, Converse; his daughter, Deborah Lytle and her husband, Bob, Gulfport, MS; grandchildren, Mindy Purnell and husband, Jerry, Kokomo, Pat Sumpter, Converse, and Mia Lytle, Gulfport, MS; great-grandchildren, Matthew Hisey, St. Ignace, MI, Marlee Sumpter, Marion, Garrett Sumpter, Marion, and Jackson Knowles, Gulfport, MS; a step-great-grandchild, Fabian Purnell; two brothers, Robert Sumpter, Tucson, AZ and William Sumpter, Nobelsville; and a sister, Betty Guyer, Avon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Joe Sumpter and his great-grandson Mark Sumpter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 at the Amboy United Methodist Church. Pastor James McDowell will officiate.
Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Amboy. A military graveside service will be provided by the Greentown American Legion.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Laird Funeral Home, Amboy, and the Amboy United Methodist Church one hour prior to services.

Fred A. Bishop, Sr., 61, Peru, passed away at 5:05 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 at Dukes Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1942, in Miami County, to Everett and Edna (Bockover) Bishop. On Feb. 13, 1988, he married Melissa Stone, and she survives.
Bishop had worked for Gen-Corp, Wabash, at Eagles Lodge #258 in Peru, and later owned his own carpet and upholstery business. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Peru, enjoyed playing music, feeding birds, and loved his dogs. A veteran of the National Guard for six years, he was also a member of the American Legion, Peru Eagles Lodge #258 and Shriners, Fort Wayne.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Fred Bishop, Jr. and wife Michelle, Peru, William Scott Bishop and wife Melissa, Lafayette; a daughter, Karen Featherstone and husband Rusty, Peru; a step-son, Joe Grimes and wife Dawn, Maine; a step-daughter, Angie (Grimes) Sparks and husband Don, Peru; a brother, Robert Bishop and wife Marilyn, Peru; two sisters, Jane and Edna Bishop, both of Peru; seven grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; three nephews, three nieces and his mother-in-law, Betty Stone, Peru.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one step-grandson.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, with Bob Damron officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, with a military committal service by the American Legion and VFW. D. Dale Caley, 91, Huntington, passed away at 12:01 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at his residence.
He was born in Huntington Oct. 10, 1913 to John Jacob and Deborah Ann Jennings Caley. On Sept. 7, 1955 he married Marjorie E. Smith in Huntington, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 7, 2003.
His employment included Caley’s Roller Rink, Caley’s Apartments, Caley’s Restaurant and Caley’s Construction and Gravel Pit, all in Huntington. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II, and was a life member of the Huntington VFW Post 2689. He also was a member of the Huntington New Hope United Brethren Church.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Wayne Caley, Jacksonville, N.C., and David C. Caley, Huntington; five daughters, Debbie Penn and husband Charlie, Huntington, Jane Troutman, Mara Sue Reen and husband John, all of Battle Creek, Mich., Kitty Caley, Texas, and Ruth Ann Caley, Grand Haven, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Gilbert (Dawn) Caley, Key West, Fla.; 47 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death along with his wife, were a son, Everett Duane Caley; a daughter, Mary Lou Caley; three brothers, Albert, Guy and Gilbert Caley; and two sisters, Clara Holly and Florence Young.

She was born Oct. 10, 1924 in Miami County to Walter E. and Elizabeth A. Radel Engel. She married John L. Drinkard Feb. 12, 1947, and he died Nov. 17, 1977.
Drinkard retired from Peru Utilities in 1984. She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and moved to Florida in 1990
Survivors include three sons, Lt. Col. Jeffery I. Drinkard and wife Teresa, Valrico, Fla., Dr. David L. Drinkard and wife Doreen, and Ed Drinkard, all of Austin, Texas; a grandson, Jasson Drinkard and wife Erin, Lakeland, Fla.; two step-grandchildren, Mindy Dahlgren, Houston, and Andrea Brady, Austin, Texas; and a sister, Mary Helen Coleman, Pasco, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Raymond Engel, in 1991.

Duane J. Conklin, 62, Peru, died at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at his residence.
He was born Dec. 1, 1940 in Logansport to Clarence Jay and Agnes Eurora Grandstaff Conklin. He married Kay W. Smith Nov. 22, 1975 in Peru, and she survives.
Conklin retired from Chrysler in 1996 after 35 years as a valve body worker. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and most of all, being with his grandchildren.
Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Michael Duane Conklin and wife Kim, U.S. Air Force Base, South Dakota, Craig Emery and wife Tina, and Christopher Nethercutt, all of Peru; two daughters, Christina Abney and husband John, Kokomo, and Wanda Torrence, Peru; six granddaughters, Crystal and Amy Torrence, Kelsey Emery, and Crystal and Kirsten Williams, all of Peru, Kaylee Conklin, South Dakota; three grandsons, John Michael and Dalton Conklin, both of South Dakota, and Kyle Emery, Peru; and two brothers, Donald D. Conklin, South Yarmin, Mass., and Harold Gene Conklin, Logansport.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Tonya Conklin.

She was born May 20, 1906 in Wabash County to Issac H. and Mary Ellis Foust. She married Raymond H. "Slim" Ross June 25, 1931. He preceded her in death Oct. 11, 1989.
Ross retired from American Stationery in Peru, and was a member of First Christian Church, Peru.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley A. Horn and husband Lee, Logansport; five grandchildren, Brenda Sue Roe, Evington, Va., Jackie L. John M. Oswalt, 78, Peru, died at 10:53 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Howard Community Hospital, Kokomo.
He was born Oct. 11, 1925, in Richland Township, to Oliver and Sadie Miller Oswalt. He graduated from Chili High School in 1943, and married Jane Powell Aug. 16, 1959. She survives.
Oswalt was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, from which he was honorably discharged. While in the Navy he received specialized training in electricity.
He was employed as an electrical advisor at the Miami-Cass REMC for 12 years, and retired from Cinergy/PSI, Kokomo, in 1988 after 22 years of service.
He was a member of the Peru Elks Lodge and a supporter of the Santa Fe United Methodist Church.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Mark Powell Oswalt, Macy, and Brian David Oswalt, Peru.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Truman Oswalt, and a sister, Lois Oswalt Hines.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Laird Funeral Home, 201 N. Main, Amboy, with Pastor Thomas Daugherty officiating. Darby retired from American Stationery. She also was a member of the Peru Elkettes and the Ladies of the Moose.

She was born Dec. 19, 1920 in Fulton County to Glen and Ethel Fidler Stanley. She married Wayne Zartman June 29, 1940 in Fulton, and he died Jan. 25, 1954. She then married Charles B. Shaw Aug. 17, 1955 in Fulton. He preceded her in death Sept. 27, 1978. She then married Hugh J. Smith Sept. 3, 1982 in Fulton, and he survives.
Survivors besides her husband include a daughter-in-law, Margaret Zartman, Logansport; a son-in-law, Rev. Vernon Knight, Kearney, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Wayne J. Larry K. McCray, 65
Larry K. McCray, 65, Bremen, died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003 at Community Hospital of Bremen after a struggle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
He was born July 25, 1938 in Bedford to Dud and Doda Hayes McCray. He married Marilyn T. Guiry July 14, 1980, and she survives.
McCray grew up in Converse and had lived in the Bremen area for 30 years. He graduated from Converse High School and received his master’s degree from Ball State University, where he played basketball.
He was a high school teacher and successfully coached basketball. He was the first coach for Oregon-Davis High School in Hamlet. He then coached at Rensselaer High School. He retired from Jostens in 2002 after 35 years of service, where he was a nationwide top salesman.
In addition, he was a member of the Shiloh Wesleyan Church in Plymouth, hunted big game in various places around the world, including Africa and Alaska; “lived life to the fullest,” and loved farming and the outdoors.
Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Jim “J.D.” McCray and wife Bonnie, Fort Wayne, Jack McCray, Rochester, and Matt McCray, Bremen; a granddaughter, Kayla L. McCray, Fort Wayne; and a step-mother, Shirley McCray, Kokomo.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Shiloh Wesleyan Church, Plymouth, with Pastor John Perkinson officiating. Burial will be in Bremen Cemetery. Brandt was a member of Christ United Methodist Church,Wabash, and attended the Wabash Friends Church. She also was a member of the Wabash A.A.R.P.
She and her husband founded Brandt’s Harley-Davidson, Wabash, in 1949.

Lee was formerly employed at AGP Corporation in Peru and a homemaker. She also was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Peru.

Margaret B. Feller, 96, Fulton, formerly of Galveston, died at 4 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003 at the Life Care Center of Rochester.
Mrs. Feller was born Oct. 12, 1906, in Miami County, to Edmond G. and Lulu M. Winninger Sharp. On Oct. 24, 1931, she married Harold G. Feller in Miami County. He preceded her in death in 1985.
She graduated from Clay Township High School, Miami County, in 1924. She was a homemaker, a member of Fulton Wesleyan Church, and enjoyed working puzzles, gardening and fishing.
Survivors are one niece, Connie Fox and husband Dan, Macy; two great-nieces, Lesa Baldwin and husband Bruce, Cutler, and Lori Williams and husband Stanley, Macy; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and four brothers, Dennis, Charles, Cecil, and Raymond Sharp.
Graveside services will be held Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, 10:30 a.m., at Galveston Cemetery. No public visitation will be held at the funeral home. Murray Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

She was born Sept. 23, 1926, in Clay City, Ky. to James H. and Nannie Mae Hall Spencer. She was married to Alva “Matt” Mattox on June 15, 1946, in Plymouth, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 2001.
Mrs. Mattox graduated from Powell County High School, Powell County, Ky. in 1943. She and her husband owned and operated Matt’s Friendly Market in Peru from 1946-1961. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Peru and a member of the United Methodist Women and Dukes Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Tanksley and husband Robert, Owasso, Okla., Carol Butler and husband John, Radcliff, Ky., and Jane Edwards and husband Gary, Peru; two sisters, Norma J. Gossett and husband Leland, Logansport, and Ima Jean Ashley and husband Virgil, Clay City, Ky.; one brother-in-law, Roger Baker, Stanton, Ky.; six grandchildren, Angie Shipman, Robert and Nicole Tanksley, Chad and Jeff Butler, and Gregg Edwards.

Mildred Berniece Eshelman, 93, Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, formerly of Miami County, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at her home.
She was born July 25, 1910 in Miami County to William E. and Sarah Olive Lewis Chichester. She graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1928, and married Walter A. Eshelman Dec. 25, 1932. He died Oct. 13, 1987.
Eshelman was a homemaker and a member of Parkview United Methodist Church in Peru. She formerly attended Macy United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and belonged to the Hope Circle. She also was a member of the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church for 65 years.
Eshelman lived most of her life in Pipe Creek and Allen townships of Miami County.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Glenn and Clarence Chichester; and a sister, Mary Ethel Foust.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Peabody Retirement Community Chapel, North Manchester, with Rev. Norman McBride officiating. She was born Sept. 13, 1952 in Peru to Wayne and Beverly Jean Tyre Wright. She graduated from Peru High School in 1970 and was in the U.S. Air Force from 1978 to 1981.
Clark was a former employee of Syndicate Sales and Party Direct in Kokomo. She also was a member of the Second Baptist Church and American Legion Post 177.
She enjoyed crocheting, sitting on her front porch and watching baseball, watching the Colts and playing with her three pets, Rajah, Rayden and Honey Bear.
Survivors include her father in Florida; two sons, Richard R. Brown and Robert Stephen Jr., both of Kokomo; two daughters, Sandra M. Miller and husband Jeffrey E., Kokomo, and Leslie M. Stephen, Kokomo, and fiance George Smith, Peru; a sister, Melody Edwards and husband Carl, Peru; several nieces and nephews; 29 grandchildren; two close friends Geraldine McKlerkin, Kokomo, and Andrew Smith, Anderson; and many “adopted” children she called her “crazy daisies.”
She was preceded in death by her mother, close friends, and ex-husbands Paul Clark and Robert Stephen.

Jarrett was a brakeman for the C & O Railroad for 38 years. He moved to Lakeland, Fla. from New Port Richey, Fla., after living there since 1992.
He attended Trinity United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Transportation Union Local 298 and the Moose Lodge 249 in Peru. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include is second wife, Mary V. Jarrett, Lakeland, Fla.; six sons, David Jarrett, Atlanta, Texas, William and Henry Lain, and John Mikels, all of Lowell, Richard Mikels, Muncie, and Pat Mikels, West Lafayette; four daughters, Annette Farrell, Winston Salem, N.C., Cheryl Hein, Lansing, Ill., Martha and Rebecca Lain, Camden; two sisters, Lillian Harleman, Jacksonville, Fla., and Carol Westwood, Lakeland, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Helene Guilaric.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Funeral Home Chapel, Lakeland, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Trinity Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, Lakeland, Fla. is handling arrangements.

Irma V. Scarlett, 62
Irma V. Scarlett, 62, Peru, died at 11:50 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2003 at her residence.
She was born April 9, 1941 in Terre Haute to Emma Jean Clemons and Donald Barnes Jr. She married James Scarlett Oct. 2, 1957, and he survives.
Scarlett was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Williams, and Kathy Walker and husband Junior, all of Peru; two sons, Burt Scarlett and wife Krystal, and Carl Scarlett, all of Peru; four sisters, Deloris Smyth, Georgia Cook, Barbara Babcock and Debi Hartleroad, all of Peru; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, with Pastor Bud Sparks officiating. Burial will be in Gaerte Cemetery, Miami County. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wabash-Miami County Home Health Care & Hospice.

Cecil Kirk, 89
Cecil Kirk, 89, Rochester, passed away at 2:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at Life Care Center, Rochester.
He was born Nov. 16, 1914 in Harrison Township, Cass County, to Anna Shaw and Charles A. Kirk. He married Edna Bonnie Mathews Jan. 2, 1937 at Kewanna, and she survives.
Kirk was a farmer, owned and operated Rochester Dairy Queen for seven years, and retired from Torx after 13 years. He also was a member of the Akron Church of God.
Survivors besides his wife include a son, Bobbie G. Kirk, Oakland, Ky.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Cecil Leroy Kirk, in 1987; and five brothers.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Virginia Bonnajean “Bonnie” Lauer, 74
Virginia Bonnajean “Bonnie” Lauer, 74, North Manchester, passed away at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at Dukes Continuing Care Center, Peru.
She was born Dec. 7, 1929 in Wabash County to Mabel Sommers and Luther Workman. She graduated from Chester High School in 1947, and married James O. Lauer Aug. 8, 1948 in North Manchester. He preceded her in death March 6, 1983.
Lauer was an office assistant and bus driver for Manchester Elementary School for 34 years. She also was a member of the North Manchester First Brethren Church, the Chester Charmers Home Extension Club and a friendly euchre club.
Survivors include a daughter, Kaye Wolf and husband Kelly, Peru; three sisters, Janet Miller and husband Richard, North Manchester, Jane Murphy and husband Jerry, Butler, and Barbara Krichbaum and husband Jim, Chelsea, Mich.; a brother, Ken Workman and wife Norma, Auburn; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Workman, North Manchester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jeff Lauer, in April 1980; and a brother, Dick Workman.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester, with the Rev. Kurt Stout officiating. Burial will be Wednesday in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Wabash County Cancer Society.

Esther Wanner, 89
Esther Wanner, 89, Lyons, formerly of Logansport, passed away Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 in Lyons Health Care, Lyons.
She was born Jan. 30, 1915 in Cass County to Bertha Smith and Boyd Bechelheimer. She married Harold Wanner Sept. 29, 1950, who preceded her in death.
Wanner was a registered nurse, and a member of Cross-Wind United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Martha Riley, Lebanon; a brother, John Bechelheimer, Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Ruth Logan and Alice Bechelheimer; and a brother, Lowell Bechelheimer.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fisher Funeral Chapel, Logansport. Interment will follow in the Hoover-Snyder Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Cross-Wind United Methodist Church.

Anthony L. “Tony” Hare, 51, Peru, passed away at 11:57 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at Howard Regional Health System, Kokomo.
He was born July 21, 1953 in Logansport to Gordon and Alice Jay Hare. He married Linda Chilcutt Nov. 30, 1994 at Oakdale Baptist Church, Peru. She survives.
Hare graduated from North White High School and Ball State University. He had been photographer for the Peru Tribune, was a member of the National Press Photographer’s Association and Indiana Press Photographer’s Association, was president of the National Press Photographers Student Association, and won Outstanding Photographer of the Year.
In addition, he also was a member of the Church of the Brethren.
Survivors besides his wife include his mother, Alice Hare, Monticello; two step-sons, Dennis Orpurt and wife Diane, Denver, and Jay Smallwood and wife Mandy, Peru; two step-daughters, Kimberly Fortney and husband Brad, Denver, and Lori Purcifull and husband Jamie, Kokomo; two brothers, Victor Hare and companion Carol Carey, Fulton, Md., and Karl Hare and wife Jeanne, Rensselaer; a sister, Kathleen Price and husband Gene, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren, Chadd and Nathan Pattison, Kris Fortney and Audrey and Macy Purcifull; a great-granddaughter, Kaelin Pattison; two nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Brethren, 134 E. Fifth St., Peru, with the Rev. Marvin Schwartz officiating. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Osborne Cemetery, Jasper County. Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Church of the Brethren.
