Doris Earleen Ulery, 79

Doris Earleen Ulery
FORT WAYNE — Doris Earleen Ulery, 79, 14 Parkway Drive, Wabash, died at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Sept. 30, 1924, on the Karns family farm north of Urbana, the daughter of Earl Jacob and Anna Dean (Yager) Karns.

She married Joseph G. Ulery on Nov. 8, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1987.

Survivors include her mother; a son, the Rev. Dr. Kent J. (Meg) Ulery, East Lansing, Mich.; a daughter, Mrs. David R. (Joleen R.) Sodervick, Peru; four grandchildren, Grayston W. (Allison) Ulery, and Nathan A. (Kristen) Ulery, East Lansing, Mich., and Jacob C. Sodervick and Krista L. Sodervick, both of Peru; two great-grandchildren; two sisters Mrs. Max (AnnaLee) Biehl, Urbana, and Karmen Caruso, Mitchell; and two brothers, Lowell D. (Marilyn) Karns, Wabash, and Loyle D. (Lois) Karns, Sharpsville.

Mrs. Ulery was employed by the Wabash Plain Dealer for 44 years, retiring in 1986. While at the Plain Dealer, she served as a proofreader, reporter and community affairs editor.

During her 44-year newspaper career, Mrs. Ulery received numerous state and national awards for her work. Among the organizations bestowing honors upon her were the National Federation of Press Women, the Women’s Press Club of Indiana, the Terre Haute Spectator, the Hoosier State Press Association, the Associated Press Managing Editors, the Hoosier American Legion Press Association and the Indiana State Teachers Association.

Other organizations bestowing honors on her during her newspaper career were Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Wabash county, the Rock City Chapter, DeMolay, the Wabash County Lion’s Eye Bank, the Wabash District, Boy Scouts of America, Wabash Rotary Club, Wabash County United Fund, Wabash Area Chamber of Commerce, the Wabash District Girls Scouts, the Wabash Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Wabash County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the United States Army Recruitment, the Mental Health Association of Wabash County, the Daughters of Penelope, the Wabash County Extension Homemakers, the Wabash Sesquicentennial Committee, the Indiana Chapter of the National Arthritis Foundation and the Mid-American Chapter of the Musical Box Society of America.

Mrs. Ulery was one of the first women journalists to enter China, and was in the U.S. ambassador’s home in China the night before President Nixon announced the normalization of relationships between the U.S. and China.

Mrs. Ulery’s memberships include the Women’s Press Club of Indiana and the National Federation of Press Women.

She also was a member of the St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ, where she served on many committees. She was past president of Church Women United, the St. Matthew’s UCC Women’s Guild, the Dorcas Circle of the Church and on many other committees. She also was past recording secretary of the Fort Wayne Regional Women’s Guild, and also was the editor of the Centennial Booklet for St. Mathew’s Church.

She also was a member the Women’s Clubhouse Association and the Wabash Unit, Woman’s Committee, Indianapolis Symphony Society.

Mrs. Ulery also was a former member of the Sigma Delta Chi, Wabash Community Service, Wabash Community Service Foundation, the American Field Service, the Wabash Valley Dance Theater, the Wabash County Arts council, all of which she was a director of; the Indiana State Museum Society, the Wabash County Arthritis Volunteer Action Committee and the Indiana Chapter of the National Arthritis Foundation, all of which she serve as a board or council member.

She was a member of the Wabash Area Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassador’s Club, the Wabash County Hospital Auxiliary, the Wabash County Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Wabash County Chapter of the Retired Teachers Association. She also is a former member of Beta Sigma Phi.

She also served as chairman for the Wabash County United Fund Special Division drive.

Mrs. Ulery served many years as co-mistress of ceremonies for the Wabash Canal Days Parade and she also served two years as mistress of ceremonies for the Urbana 7-Mile Festival. She was an honorary marshal in 1991.

She also worked closely with the Wabash Century of Light, Wabash and Wabash County Sesquicentennial and Wabash Canal Days committees.

Mrs. Ulery graduated from Urbana High School in 1942.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ. Dr. Stephen Gray will officiate.

Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester.

Friends may call from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, or one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Preferred memorials are to the Joseph G. and Earleen Ulery Scholarship Fund or the Arthritis Foundation Indiana Chapter.

Mary T. Girard, 83


Mary T. Girard, 83, Bunker Hill, passed away at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at the Caring Hands Health Care Center.

Girard, who was a homemaker, was born April 5, 1920, in Fountain Run, Ky., to William Huskisson and Maude Durham Huskisson. On December 30, 1939, she married Ted A. Girard, who preceded her in death on May 28, 2001. She was a member of the Bunker Hill First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters; Kay White and husband Maynard, Bunker Hill, and Patty Girard, Bunker Hill; two grandsons, Tim White and wife Nina, Englewood, Ohio, and Gary White and wife Jessica, Bunker Hill; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Taylor, Kate and Alexander.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 27, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Allen Funeral Home, Bunker Hill, with the Reverend Charles Layne officiating. Friends may call 5-8 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Springdale Cemetery, Bunker Hill.

Daniel Effort McCoy, 70

Daniel Effort, McCoy, 70, Wabash, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003 at 12:41 a.m. at Wabash County Hospital.

McCoy was born Jan. 26, 1933 to Ben McCoy and Virdie Newsom Platkus in Floyd County, Ky.

He retired in 1986 from GenCorp in Wabash after 30 years of employment.

McCoy married Virginia Hunt on Sept. 15, 1951 in Legon, Ky.

He enjoyed ceramics and construction as hobbies, and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

McCoy was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Danny McCoy and wife Julie, Peru, and Terry McCoy and wife Barbara, Indianapolis; one daughter, Barbara A. Music and husband David, Roann; one daughter-in-law, Roxie McCoy, Wabash; three granddaughters, Angela Rutledge and husband Rusty, Lagro, Terri L. McCoy and husband Mark, Wabash, and Danielle Berry and husband Mike, Wabash; two step-grandsons, Tommy Fetz and Terry Fetz, Wabash; three sisters, Betty Dollarhide, Florida, Lorene Butcher and husband Bernie, Wabash, and Fannie Mae King, Kentucky; one brother, Sonny Platkus and wife Wilma, Huntington; three great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Home, Wabash, with Charles Easterday officiating.

Burial will be at the Wallace Cemetery, Wabash.

Colleen Hartleroad
Colleen A. Hartleroad, 62, Peru, passed away at 2:30 p.m., Monday, December 22, 2003, at Dukes Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 3, 1941, in Denver, to Harry R. "Hank" Cover and Anne Ireland Cover Keim. On July 5, 1959, she married Larry Hartleroad, and he survives.

Colleen worked at Value Land Furniture and Carpet. she was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella. She served as president of the Lincoln Elementary School PTA, as well as the Dukes Hospital Pink Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, her mother, one daughter, Laura Hartleroad, Peru; two sons, Gean Paul Hartleroad, Peru, and Daniel Hartleroad and wife Dawn, Peru; three grandchildren, Leslie Halley, Grant Hartleroad, and Blair Hartleroad; and one brother, John D. Cover, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her father, her husband, and one daughter, Sonya Annalee Hartleroad.

Funeral services will be at St. Charles Catholic Church, Saturday, December 27, 2003, at 1 p.m., with Father Francis Kilcline officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Peru. Friends may call 4-8 p.m., Friday, at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. There will be a Scripture Service at 8 p.m., Friday.

Lorena E. Petty
Lorena E. Petty, 85, formerly of Peru, passed away at 7:04 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003 at her residence in Indianapolis.

She was born Oct. 21, 1918 in Madisonville, Kent. to George W. Yates and Hester (Brecker) Yates.

Petty was married to James Bucher on Dec. 2, 1935 until his death in 1957.

She later married Meredith Petty on April 25, 1972.

Petty was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, Peru.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, her parents, six brothers, one sister, three daughters, one son-in-law, and one step-son.

Petty is survived by three daughters, Carol Michels, Birdsboro, Penn., Shirley Snyder, Osceola, and Sandra Chapman, Kokomo; one son, Thomas Bucher, South Bend; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Steve Ailes officiating.

Friends may call Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Peru.

Marcia A. Shively Miller, 69


Marcia A. Shively Miller, 69, Muncie , passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, Feb. 26, 2004 , at Ball Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Miller was born on Aug. 1, 1934, to Laurel and Helen Childers Shively, and had been a resident of Muncie since 1955.

She was a native of Kokomo and graduated from Clay Township High School in Miami County in 1952. She attended Ball State Teachers College from 1953-1955, and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority.

Miller worked at Yorktown (Marsh) Foodliner in the IBM Department, the Colonial Store IBM in Norfolk, Va. and Ball Store IBM Department. She was owner of Bressler’s 33 Flavors Ice Cream Store in the Muncie Mall.

She also owned and operated Miller’s Soda Fountain in Gaston, and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her son, Jeffrey K. Miller and wife Susie, Eaton; three daughters, Michelle Miller, Melynda Swindell and husband John, and Shannon Miller, all of Bloomington; one sister, Karen Harts and husband Don, Amboy; six grandchildren, Emily Anne, Sarah J. and Caleb John Miller, Allyson Lauriel and Kaitlyn Christine Grice, and Michael F. Swindell; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Kristi Miller.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Mark Dill officiating. Burial will follow at the Santa Fe Cemetery, north of Amboy. Anna Marie Davisson Kent, 64


Anna Marie Davisson Kent, 64, Rome, Ga., passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004 after a six-year battle with thymoma cancer.

She was born Sept. 3, 1939 in Peru to John and Edna Davisson. She married Tom Kent in 1981, and he survives

Kent graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1957, earned a bachelor’s degree in history and literature from Indiana University, and earned a master’s degree in library administration from the same school. She also joined the Delta Zeta Sorority there.

She taught in the Indiana public school system for three years after graduation, and then joined the faculty of Monmouth College, Illinois, as a librarian, serving for more than 15 years.

Kent accompanied her husband while he was employed in Peshawar, Pakistan, Amman, Jordan and Fayoum, Egypt from 1982 until they settled in Rome, Ga. in 1990. She volunteered at the Police Public School in Peshawar, and later in 1983 she was elected to the Vestry of the Guides Chapel, an Anglican church in Mardan, Pakistan, made famous in the book “The Far Pavilions.” Her husband was assigned to work in Jordan in 1985, where she was employed as a librarian for the Amman (Jordan) Center for Oriental Research. While they lived in Fayoum, Egypt from 1988 to 1990, she volunteered at All Saints Anglican Cathedral Library in Cairo. She also conducted guided tours for numerous friends and family who visited Egypt during her stay.

When she and her husband moved to Rome, Ga., she volunteered at Rome Floyd County Library Gift Shop for many years, and was active in the Rome Symphony Women’s Organization. She endorsed the work of, and volunteered time and treasure for the Angel Express. She was a frequent lay reader and occasional chalice bearer for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, and regularly attended and enjoyed musical drama activities provided by local colleges and other organizations in Rome, Ga. She also enjoyed needlepoint, making gifts of her work for friends and family, along with a kneeler for her church in 2002.

Survivors besides her husband include three step-children, Thomas, Teressa and Timothy; five step-grandchildren, Brandon and Laura Kent, and Logan, Daniel and Andrew Whitlock; an uncle, Verl Sandifur, Bunker Hill; and two first cousins, Susan Bender, Indianapolis, and David Davisson, Louisville, Ky.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John N. Davisson.

A private interment service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, in the Memory Garden adjacent to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, followed by a celebration service of evening prayer at the church. Friends and relatives are requested to attend the wake in Daniel Hall following the service, with music, food and drink.

Vertis P. Little, 81, formerly of St. Elmo, Ill., passed away at Floyd Memorial Hospital, New Albany.

She was a member of Northside Christian Church and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Walter Little, New Albany; four daughters, Cynthia Murphy, Denver, Nancy Fisher, North Manchester, Darla Gradeless, Huntington, and Terri Mullins, New Albany; three brothers, Edward Waddell, St. Elmo, Ill., Lawrence “Larry” Waddell, Vandalia, Ill., and Jack Waddell, Dawson Springs, Ky., two sisters, Flossie Graham, Altamont, Ill., and Effie “Liz” Pforr, Mattoon, Ill.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Bramlett; and two brothers, Floyd and Jim Waddell.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kraft Funeral Services, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, with entombment in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Richard Wilson
Richard P. Wilson, 74, Peru, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at 8:12 p.m. at Howard Community Hospital, Kokomo.

He was born March 18, 1929 in Miami County to Lewis and Doris (Rademaker) Wilson.

Wilson married Phyllis Wayne Wilson Oct. 7, 1950 in Peru.

He worked for the Peru Police Dept. for 20 years prior to retiring as the Assistant Chief of Police in 1974.

He later worked as a salesman for Bob Schwartz Ford-Chrysler until retiring in 1991.

Wilson was a 1947 graduate of Peru High School, and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, and member of the Board of Trustees.

Wilson was also a member of the Miami Lodge #72 of the Fraternal Order of Police.

He was an avid golfer, who enjoyed playing with his friends at the Leaning Tree Course.

Wilson is survived by his wife; son, Jeffrey L. Wilson and wife Connie, Mexico; daughter, Lisa Brown and husband Michael, Huntersville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Nicolette Brown, Stephen Wilson, Blake Payton, and Meredith Payton; three brothers, Earl Wayne and wife Mardy, Peru; Jean Bowyer and wife Clayson, Peru; Dean Wayne and wife Betty Jo, Carefree, Az.; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Harold Wilson.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, at 1 p.m. at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, with Chaplain Steve Fleck officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru.

Richard P. Wilson, 74


Richard P. Wilson, 74, Peru, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at 8:12 p.m. at Howard Community Hospital, Kokomo.

Mary Catherine Johnson, 92, Peru, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at 8:45 p.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, Peru.

She was born March 26, 1911 in Miami County to Charles V. and Catherine S. Johnson.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, and also the Eastern Star, Amaranth Lodge, Moose Lodge and American Legion auxillaries.

Johnson is survived by three nephews; and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at Mount Hope Chapel, Peru, with Reverend George McCarty officiating.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru.

Josephine Elizabeth Place, 87, Denver, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at 3:05 a.m. at Dukes Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 19, 1916 in Wabash County to James Earl Corder and Bertha Pauline Kimpel Corder.

Place married Robert S. Place Oct. 6, 1935 in Indianapolis.

She was a homemaker, a 1934 graduate of Jefferson Township High School, and loved gardening and cooking.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Place, Jr. and wife Betty, Garland Tx., and Michael J. Place and wife Laura, Peru; daughter, Patricia R. Fouts and husband Charles, Seymour; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Bill Corder; and grandson Bradley Fouts.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at McClain Funeral Home, Denver.

Burial will be at Westlawn Cemetery, Denver, with Reverend Phillip Haslinger officiating.

Ruth E. Rhoades, 79, Logansport, passed away Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004 at 7:50 a.m. at the Chase Convalescent Center, Logansport.

She was born Aug. 2, 1924 in Cass County to Charles Kline and Mary (Wild) Kline.

Rhoades married John F. Rhoades April 3, 1943 in Logansport.

She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Miami Baptist Church and a 1942 graduate of New Waverly High School.

She is survived by her husband; daughter, Bonita Ruth Rogers and husband Jack, West Des Moines, Ia., two sons, John C. Rhoades and wife Carol, Indianapolis, and Ronald L. Rhoades and wife Kelly, Pittsboro; two sisters, Beatrice Dunsizer and husband Earl, Cincinnati, Oh., and Alice Gall and husband William, Phoenix. Az.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one sister.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Miami Baptist Church with Reverend Jan Hobbs officiating.

Visitation will be Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Gundrum Funeral Home, Logansport, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Burial will be at the Ever-Rest Memorial Park Cemetery, Logansport.

Kenneth Hartleroad
Kenneth Edwards Hartleroad, 90, Peru, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at 6:15 a.m. at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, Peru.

Hartleroad, who owned the K. E. Hartleroad Company (Home Furnishing Store), lived on his farm near Denver for 58 years.

He was born Feb. 11, 1914 in Miami County to Fred and Mary (Edwards) Hartleroad.

Hartleroad married Velma I. Ellis on Sept. 26, 1934.

He was a member of the Peru Church of the Brethren, and a long time member of the Peru Lions Club. At one time he traveled to Japan to attend the Lions Club International convention, and he also enjoyed oil painting and gardening.

Hartleroad is survived by son, Larry Hartleroad, Peru; daughter, Sandra Conklin and husband Ronald, Peru; four grandchildren, Tiffany Pope, Laura Hartleroad, Daniel Hartleroad, and Gean-Paul Hartleroad; two brothers, Robert Hartleroad, Peru, and John Hartleroad, Logansport, and one sister, Opal Mills, Frankfort; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Peru Church of the Brethren Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Marvin Schwartz officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, Peru.

Gabrielle ‘Gabby’ Violet Ann Enyeart, 10, Peru, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004 at 7:56 a.m. after suffering injuries in an auto accident.

She was born in Peru on Sept. 3, 1993 to James L. Enyeart and Penny C. (Townsend) Enyeart.

Patty Jo Stone, 62, Peru, died at 9:12 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.

She was born Feb. 19, 1941 in Miami County to John and Clara Trobaugh Clelland. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Ross Hartleroad, and Ralph and Randy Stone, all of Peru; two daughters, Hope Tolliver and Faith Stone, both of Peru; two sisters, Dorothy VanScoy, Arizona, and Nancy Baker, Crete, Ill.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Clelland; and a sister, Ruth Townsend.

Terry Allen Mills, 61, Peru, died at 4:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Peru.

He was born April 27, 1942 in Peru to Louise Mooney Mills and James Mills Sr.

Mills was a self-employed contractor.

Survivors include a daughter, Annette Mills McCallen, Wabash; a two grandchildren, Robert McCallen IV and Blayke McCallen, both of Wabash; a sister, Evelyn Townsend, San Rafael, Calif.; and two brothers, James Mills Jr. and John Mills, both of Peru.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The body will be cremated. No visitation or funeral are planned. Arrangements are being handled by Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel, Wabash. Preferred memorials are to the Miami County Cancer Society.

Louise A. Miller, 83, Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Community Hospital South, Indianapolis.

She was born in Peru on April 6, 1920, to John W. and Louisa Francisca Huber Miller. She was employed by Lau Industries, having retired in 1986, and was a former member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, and a present member of St. Jude Catholic Church.

Survivors include one sister, Mary E. Lang, Indianapolis; five nephews, Stephen Lang, Cincinnati, Anthony G. Lang, Greenwood, and Edward, Garry and Christopher Lang, Indianapolis; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; and three great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Walter C. Miller.

A mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Indianapolis.

Doris R. Harris, 72, Peru, passed away at 6:25 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at Dukes Continuing Care Center, Peru.

She was born in Peru on May 19, 1931, to Paul H. and Dorothy D. Wheeler McNabney. On Dec. 23, 1972, she married Marvin L. Harris in Rochester, and he preceded her in death Oct. 20, 1996.

Harris was employed at United Technologies until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the Chapel of Praise, Phi Gamma Sorority, Civic Center Saturday Night Euchre Club and an active member of Area V Senior Center.

Survivors include her daughter, Ellen Digue and husband Larry, Denver; two sons, James Gehle and wife Sara, Portsmouth, Va., and Timothy Gehle and wife Suzie, Peru; a brother, James P. Langer was formerly employed at the Peru Nursing Home, Hauskee Harlen Manufacturing and Canterbury House.

Survivors include her sister, Harriet Swindler, Peru; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and five sisters.

Stephen J. Glassburn, 50, Denver, Ind., passed away at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital.

He was born June 23, 1953 in Peru to Carl L. and Esther M. Ellars Glassburn. He married Sandra Black March 23, 1980, and she survives.

Glassburn retired from Square D Company, and lived in Miami County all his life. He also enjoyed horses and riding four-wheelers.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Jeremy W. Glassburn, Denver, Ind.; three sisters, Shirley McIntosh, Peru, Janice Korba and husband Dave, Kokomo, and Linda Skipper and husband Larry, Deedsville; 12 nephews; seven nieces and a great-nephew.

Jerry D. Shepherd, 66, Galveston, passed away at 2:18 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004 at his residence with his children by his side.

He was born Aug. 11, 1937 in Kokomo to Paul and Katherine Massey Shepherd. He attended Kokomo High School.

Shepherd was employed with Trelleborg, Peru, retiring in May 2003. Since his retirement he enjoyed working with his dump truck business, helping others with driveway and dirt needs, doing things with his children, like attending truck and tractor pulls, working on their vehicles, homes and equipment. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, going to their many sporting events and activities, and restoring old tractors.

In addition, he was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and United Steel Workers of America Local 2958.

Survivors besides his mother in Kokomo include a son, Jerry W. Shepherd and companion Bev Andrews, Galveston; two daughters, Malinda Galloway and husband Rick, and Brenda Harris and husband Devon, all of Logansport; a brother, Mike Shepherd and wife Linda, Tipton; a sister, Penny Sacks, Winamac; three grandchildren, Taylor and Darrien Harris, and Konner Galloway; extended family, Linette McClaran and Kevin Stevens, and their children, Alexander and Alyssa; special friends, Phil and Dee Bullick, Galveston; five nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Paul E. Shepherd; and a nephew, Arnold Shepherd.

Lucille E. Bennett, 93, passed away on January 26, 2004, in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

She was born February 24, 1910, to George and Lulu (Wiese) McElwee.

Lucille retired from the W. C. Redmon Company in 1991, at the age of 81, after 65 years of working with friends and associates. She was a lifelong resident of Peru, a member of the Peru Civic Center Board for 15 years, a volunteer for Gateway/Bona Vista, a member of the First Baptist Church, and a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Peru.

Survivors include her son, Jack McAllister, a daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren, all of Cheyenne; a niece that she was very close to, Diane Bradley of Wabash, and a sister-in-law Loretta Bennett, Peru.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion "Mooch" Bennett; her sister and brother-in-law, Joseph and Betty Jean Bradley, and a brother-in-law, William Bennett.

There will be a service at the Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel on February 24, 2004, at 10 a.m., with Pastor Robert Adelsperger officiating, before the internment of ashes. Arrangements are by Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home.

David M. Davis, 59, Andrews, formerly of Wabash, passed away at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at his residence.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1944, in Wabash, to Robert P. and Ruby Davis. On Sept. 2, 1966 he married Mildred A., and she survives.

Davis graduated from Wabash High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a retired factory worker, and a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Wabash.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Dawn Marie Saunders, and Amy Joe Wall and husband Bill, all of Huntington; three grandchildren, Ethan and Rylee Saunders, and Brannon Wall, all of Huntington; one brother, Robert L. Ronald L. Sharp, 67, Macy, who lived in Kokomo until 1999, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital.

He was born May 18, 1936 in Miami County to Raymond L. and Gertrude A. Smith Sharp. He married Sandra L. Evans Feb. 14, 1976 in Kokomo, and she survives.

Sharp graduated from Clay Township High School in 1954. He was employed in the skilled trades as a machinist at the Chrysler Transmission Plant for 37 years, retiring in 1991. He also was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Rochester, and UAW Local 685.

In addition, he enjoyed his lake home and activities there, gardening, woodworking and loved cats and other animals.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, David L. Sharp and wife Lou Ann, Amboy, and Brian V. Kitts, Macy; two daughters, Linda K. Jackson and husband Dennis, Marion, and Susan M. Detamore and husband Harry, Amboy; four grandchildren, Amy L. Murray and husband Karl, Mathew Osborne, Caitlin Sharp and Amelia Detamore, all of Amboy; a brother, Garry L. Sharp and wife Judy, Bunker Hill; two sisters, Janet Radar and husband Robert, and Margaret Erickson and companion David Addison, all of Avon, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Fred A. Bishop, Sr., 61, Peru, passed away at 5:05 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 at Dukes Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1942, in Miami County, to Everett and Edna (Bockover) Bishop. On Feb. 13, 1988, he married Melissa Stone, and she survives.

Bishop had worked for Gen-Corp, Wabash, at Eagles Lodge #258 in Peru, and later owned his own carpet and upholstery business. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Peru, enjoyed playing music, feeding birds, and loved his dogs. A veteran of the National Guard for six years, he was also a member of the American Legion, Peru Eagles Lodge #258 and Shriners, Fort Wayne.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Fred Bishop, Jr. and wife Michelle, Peru, William Scott Bishop and wife Melissa, Lafayette; a daughter, Karen Featherstone and husband Rusty, Peru; a step-son, Joe Grimes and wife Dawn, Maine; a step-daughter, Angie (Grimes) Sparks and husband Don, Peru; a brother, Robert Bishop and wife Marilyn, Peru; two sisters, Jane and Edna Bishop, both of Peru; three nephews; three nieces and his mother-in-law, Betty Stone, Peru.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one step-grandson.

She was born March 3, 1915, in Hardin County, Ky., to Lee and Lula Bell (Hilton) Best, both deceased. On Jan. 27, 1939, she married John A. Singer, and he preceded her in death in 1985.

Singer was a member of the First Church of God and the American Legion Auxiliary, and was active in the YMCA Senior Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lockhart and husband Dave, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Martha Short and husband Don, Peru; a son, George Singer, Louisville, Ky.; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sons, Everett, John, and Billie Joe Singer; one daughter, Lula Owen; five brothers, Ray, Harvey, Coy, John R. and George Best; and one sister, Vara Jeffers.

Patricia Louise Bosse, 61


Patricia Louise Bosse, 61, Peru, passed away at 3:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at her residence following a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born May 21, 1942 in Detroit, Mich., to William and Martha Elsey. On Aug. 24, 1963 she married Wallace P. Bosse in Osgood, and he survives.

Bosse worked as a registered nurse at Dukes Memorial Hospital, and at the Veterans’ Hospital, Marion, where she retired in 1998. In 1960 she graduated from Osgood High School, as the class valedictorian. She also graduated with distinction from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Indianapolis, in 1963.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Peru, where she sang in the choir, led the youth group, taught Sunday School, served as a deacon and worked in the church office. She was a past member of Psi Iota Xi sorority, and was a leader in Brownies and Girl Scouts. She also enjoyed sewing, crafts and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors besides her husband and father in Peru include two daughters, Kristin L. Hunter and husband Bob, Peru, and Karyl D. Kirk and husband Jim, Wabash; a son, Kyle W. Bosse and wife Jennifer, Brownsburg; a brother, Robert Elsey and wife Judy, Terre Haute; a sister Diane Hosfeld and husband Terry, Crown Point; a brother-in-law, Dale Bosse, Batesville; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Scheele and husband Jim, Batesville; and eight grandchildren, Sarah and Rebecca Hunter, Peru, Hannah, Abby and Noah Kirk, Wabash, and Jacob, Allison and Jordan Bosse, Brownsburg.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Richard L. Burns, 66, Macon, Ill., passed away at 10:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

He was born on June 15, 1937, to Donald Francis and Lovene Klein Burns. On Nov. 3, 1980, he married Nancy J. Kinney in Decatur, Ill., and she survives.

Burns was a conductor for Norfolk and Western Railroad for 40 years, and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Peru. He was a member of United Transportation Union Local 768 of Cleveland, Ohio, and loved farming and woodworking.

Mary Elizabeth McAllister, 78, Peru, passed away at 8 a.m., Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Dukes Continuing Care Center, Peru.

She was born on June 22, 1925 in Peru to John T. and Josephine Haley McAllister. She graduated from Peru High School in 1943.

McAllister was a former employee of A & P, Kroger and Five Star grocery stores, and The Siding Restaurant. She was a devout Catholic, and a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church Daughters of Isabella and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed traveling, was an avid Euchre player and enjoyed playing cards with her friends.

Survivors include a sister, Regis McAllister, Peru; a niece, Linda Bryant and husband Larry, Riverside, Calif.; a great-niece, Captain Tiffany Bryant, Fort Bragg, N.C.; a great-nephew, Major Tim Bryant, Quantico, Va.; and a great-niece by marriage, Jennifer Bryant, Fort Bragg, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joseph McAllister; one niece, Pam McAllister Mishler; and a great-nephew, Lieutenant Todd Bryant.

Luella M. Saylor, 87, Peru, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at her residence.

She was born Dec. 9, 1916 in Peru to Frank and Nettie Richardson. She married Norman “Pop Eye” Saylor Dec. 10, 1934, and he preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1992.

Saylor retired from Kuepper Favor Co., where she served as a union steward. She also was a homemaker, and lived in Peru all her life.

Survivors include three sons, Terry “Nick” Saylor and wife Cindy, Denver, Ronald “Bo” Saylor and wife Denise, Union City, Calif., and Robert “Bob” Saylor and wife Michele, Peru; three daughters, Judith Pogue and husband Ernest, Hollywood, Fla., Sherry Saylor, Peru, and Jane Wolf and husband Bobby, Plains, Mont.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters.

Dennis Eugene Benedict, 50


Dennis Eugene Benedict, 50, passed away peacefully in his home in Gilbert, Ariz., Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was formerly of Twelve Mile.

He was born April 15, 1953, in Logansport. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1970, and served his country during the Vietnam War. Upon his return in 1972, Dennis married his first wife and they had a son together. He moved to Arizona in 1981 and pursued his career as a handyman extraordinaire. In 1983 he married his second wife, Cathy Kaye Brown, and they shared joy in the births of their three children.

Dennis enjoyed working in the maintenance facility at Banner Baywood Hospital, Mesa, Ariz., and was ready to celebrate 15 years of service. He commended the people he worked with and benefited from their company as friends.

He went back to school in January 2003 to work towards his goal of earning a degree in engineering. He constantly stressed the importance of education, and left this imprint on family and friends. Dennis was an avid movie collector who could fix anything, and was a family man who loved spending time with his children, voicing how proud he was of their accomplishments. He enjoyed the outdoors and wanted nothing more than to live out his days on the land he grew up on with his family that loved him.

Survivors are his step-father, Charles Hiatt, Arizona; wife, Cathy Kaye Benedict; children, Dennis Eugene Benedict, Jr., Tempe, Ariz., Brandice Nicole Elliott and husband Marc, Gilbert, Ariz., and Charity Ann Downing and husband David, Tempe, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George Woodruf and Mary Ann Benedict; his mother, Marilyn Carol Hiatt; and a son, Cody Tyler Benedict.

Dennis’ life will be celebrated at Bethlehem Methodist Church, at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, with arrangements by McClain Funeral Home, Twelve Mile. Rev. Teri White will officiate. There will be military graveside rites by the Logansport American Legion and VFW, and he will be laid to rest with his grandparents in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico.

Melvin Everett Hartleroad, 78


Melvin Everett Hartleroad, 78, Riverview, Fla., passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2003. He was married to Betty Kerschner Hartleroad, and she preceded him in death.

A native of Peru, he had resided in the Tampa area since 1973, coming from Lafayette, Ind.

He is survived by his son, Jerry Hartleroad and wife Katherine, Tampa, Fla.; daughters Linda Hartleroad First and husband Michael, Sr., Valrico, Fla., Cathy Lewis and husband Robert, Alturas, Fla.; a brother, Wayne Hartleroad and wife Marjorie, Logansport; sister, Doris Hierholzer and husband John, Haines City, Fla.; seven grandchildren; Michael, Jr., Scott, Lisa, Christopher, David, Lori and Dale; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and a brother, Cecil Hartleroad.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, August 22, 2003, at Stowers Brandon Chapel, 401 W. Brandon Blvd., Brandon, FL 33511. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mildred Mutch, 73


Mildred Mutch, 73, Peru, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at NorthWoods Village, Kokomo.

She was born June 24, 1929 in Peru to Richard and Mary Hight Saylor. She married Andrew Mutch Dec. 15, 1961, and he died Sept. 30, 1997.

Mutch was a homemaker and a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Tim Harshman and wife Janet, Logansport, Larry Harshman and wife Marguarita, Texas, and Wayne Mutch and wife Jane, Peru; a daughter, Linda Ballard and husband Patrick, Peru; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Cass County. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.

Maynard R. Martin, Jr., 73


Retired Senior Master Sgt. Maynard R. Martin, Jr., 73, New Waverly, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.

He was born Sept. 10, 1929, to Maynard R. Martin, Sr. and Ann G. Buckley Martin in Columbus. On March 6, 1953, he married Norma R. Sprague in Columbus, and she survives. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 6, 2003.

Martin was in the Naval Air Force from 1946 until 1950. He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1987, where he served from 1954 to 1987. He had served at Bakalar Air Force Base, Columbus, and Grissom Air Force Base, Peru. He served tours of duty in Berlin Airlift and in Vietnam. He was a member of Spring Creek Christian Church for 17 years and continued his biblical studies at Summit Theological Seminary in Peru. He was an elder at the Church of Christ in Garden City and Logansport, and he loved to travel the world.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Maynard “Butch” Martin III and wife Amy, Fishers, and Eric “Benji” Martin, Lawrence; three grandsons, Nathan, Mitchell and Andrew; three brothers, Paul Martin and wife Faye, Ralph Martin and wife Gloria, and Warren Martin and wife Sandy, all of Columbus; two sisters, Lorraine Pacheco and husband Lee, Columbus, and Helen Miller and husband and Dick, Henderson, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Donna Mae Juraskovich.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Spring Creek Christian Church, Logansport, and at 3 p.m. Saturday at Garden City Church of Christ, Columbus, with Pastor Greg Ratliff officiating. Burial will be in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kroeger Funeral Home, Logansport. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Summit Theological Seminary, Peru.

Willie Oliver, 68


Willie Oliver, 68, Kokomo, died at 1:22 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2003 at Howard Community Hospital.

He was born July 7, 1934 in Clarksville, Ark., to Jake and Amanda Ivory Oliver. He married Freddie Mae Turner Nov. 11, 1957 in Hernando, Miss., and she survives.

Oliver retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years as a Tech Sergeant in 1977, having served in the Vietnam era. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1994 after 10 years. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 177, Road Knights Motorcycle Club, the VFW, Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and the 20 Plus Club.

Survivors besides his wife of 45 years include three sons, Willie Oliver Jr., Gregory E. Oliver and wife Cindy, all of Peru, and Anthony D. Oliver and wife Lori, Kokomo; a sister, Alberta Isaac, Danville, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, Monica G. Pickles, James M., Tisha M., Ashli N., Brittni R., Teri L. and Daniesha R. Oliver, Adam, April, Arin and Ann Confer; and five great-grandchildren, Bryce and Victoria Pickles, J.D. and Claire Stone, and Aleisha Deweese.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Paul William Barrett Sr. as eulogist and Pastor Lonnie Anderson as officiant. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Kokomo. Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Robert Earl Grimes, 78


Robert Earl Grimes, 78, Toledo, Ohio, died Wednesday morning, June 18, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Maumee, Ohio.

He was born Sept. 30, 1924 in Peru to Carl Ruben and Dorothy Helen Gross Grimes. On April 19, 1952 he married Dorothy Louise Wagner and she survives in Toledo.

Grimes retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad in 1985, after 33 years, as an engineer. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Toledo, where he was a past president of the Holy Name Society. He was a past president of the Canton Five Cattle Association, and a member of the Breeders of Brown Swiss Cass County Saddle Club.

Survivors besides his wife include one son, Robert Lee Grimes and wife Tammy, Northwood, Ohio; two daughters, Marilou Bruhn, Napoleon, Ohio, and Carolyn S. Hansen, Toledo, Ohio; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Grimes, and one sister, Betty Oldham.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church, 914 Colburn Ave., with Father Paul Kwiatkowski, celebrant. Interment will be in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.

Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave., Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday 7-9 p.m., and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., where a rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the church or charity of the donor’s choice.

Annabelle D. Hammond, 90


Annabelle D. Hammond, 90, LaPorte, formerly of Akron, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte, after an extended illness.

She was born Feb. 10, 1913 in Akron to Wilson Shriver and Rosabelle Hattery. She married Harold D. Hammond Jan. 18, 1930 in Akron. He died Aug. 28, 1983.

Hammond had worked 18 years at Singer Controls, North Manchester, and also was a homemaker. In addition, she was a member of the Akron Church of God and the Bunco Ladies Club, and a World War II Mother.

Survivors include three daughters, Arlene Cole, Gladys Hight and Marla Vasquez and husband Horacio, all of LaPorte; a son, Bud L. Hammond and wife Joan, Akron; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James L. Hammond, four sisters and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with Rev. Lowell Burrus officiating. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
