About 1 1/4 mile west of
N.W. corner of BARRON
RESERVE & on the OLD HENRY
SEYBOLD FARM in the S.W. corner of the S.E. 1/4 of S.E. 1/4 of
section 19, T.27N., R.I.E.,
2nd IN P.M., in the S.W. part of
NOBLES TOWNSHIP in western
CASS COUNTY in north-central INDIANA.
Cemetery is about 1/2 mile
west of BURLEY HOLLOW [formed by the
1st large creek west of Cottonwood Creek, a northern tributary of the
Wabash River], and is on high ground [the north terrace-rim of the Wabash River]
& N. of the Rosetta Seybold HEDDE farm home, commonly known as the Old Henry
Seybold farm which lies north of U.S. Highway 24 [Logansport- to-Monticello]
& sits back from the road.
The fieldwork was done
18-Nov-1941 by the Honorable A.D. Brandt , a member of the L’Anguille Valley
Memorial Association & well-known Noble Township Historian of Royal Center,
IN & the report prepared by Robert B. Whitsett Jr. (secretary) of the
L’A.V.M.A.
This land was originally set
aside by the late Jacob Bookwalter in 1848, not only as a burial-ground but also
for the proposed building of a Methodist Meeting House which never came to pass
with several others flourishing in the area. In 1881 the land was retro-deeded
back to Jacob Bookwalter who than deeded it in 1889 to the Trustees of the
proposed United Brethren Church which likewise never became a reality.
The last burial here was in
the 1870’s. Notes are included from the late local historian, Dr.
J.Z.Powel.
