LEEDY CEMETERY

A Former & completely abandoned  Burial-Ground [later done away with] in N.E. WASHINGTON Township, CASS County, INDIANA, in S.W.1/4 of S.W.1/4 of Sec. 3, T 26 N., R.2E., 2nd IN P.M.

Back in the days before the consolidation of little one-room schools, Washington Townships School House Number One was situated in the extreme S.W. corner of Sec.3 [slightly less than 1mile W.] of Anoka [“or Herman City”]. About 330 yards [60 rods] N.E. of this little school house & on the old DANIEL LEEDY farm, there was [according to reliable former county historians] a small cemetery in which 7 or 8 members of the LEEDY family were buried. About the beginning of the 20th century, all of them are to reportedly have been carefully disinterred & removed to a much larger & more permanent cemetery in the nearby Village of Anoka . Since it’s possible that some early family member was interred here without a marker or record I make this report though I have no reason to believe that anyone remains interred in this cemetery. I wouldn’t even make this report except that I continue to receive phone calls, letters & postcards in addition to other methods of communication admonishing us not to forget or overlook this former burying place.

Daniel Leedy seems to have been a highly respected member of the Church of the Brethren & a highly esteemed citizen.  Born in PA, he arrived in IN before 1854. His wife, Miss Elizabeth Nelson [daughter] of Wm. & Mary A. [ Butler ] Nelson who was born near Cincinnati , OH on 10-9-1824.

They followed the tide of settlement Northwestward first to Rush Co., IN & than after the Civil War settling in Cass Co.

These names & dates are perhaps worth recording here though the present writer,

 R. B. Whitsett, Jr. has no actual proof that any of these persons were ever buried here even temporarily. It is also highly unlikely that any of them are still buried here.
