This database is a combination of data from the tombstones in May 2007 (and later), Funeral Home Information, Obituaries and the L'Anguille Valley Memorial Association's reading done on OCT. 21, 1942. The L'Anguille Valley information was input by Pat Fiscel. More will be added as data becomes available. If you have further information, obituaries, tombstone photos for this cemetery, I will be happy to add them as time allows. Please send by email to Debby. Please mention the cemetery name, as I am working on a number of cemeteries.
Occasionaly called the ONWARD cemetery and formerly Known as LITTLE DEER CREEK cemetery (because it is situated on the E.& S. Terrace rim of that winding southern tributary of Pipe Creek known as Little Deer Creek) ; and, still earlier, as the THOMAS cemetery which names are still occasionally applied to the large (and more than-a-century-old) cemetery.
This Large Rural cemetery is situated about Three-Quarters of a mile west of the [incorportated] Town of ONWARD; And a Quarter of a Mile S.of the Columbus [Ohio]- To-Logansport [IN] line of the PA railroad; The N.E. portion of the S.W. 1/4 of the S.E. 1/4 of Section 17 of the N.E. Cemetery lies west of the Northern terminus of a Lane (which leads 1/4 mile South to the East-To-West County-Highway which comes from ONWARD). This High-Land overlooking the beautiful Hollow of "Little Deer Creek" (A PIPE CREEK TRIBUTARY which should Not be confused with the Large and Westward-Flowing [BIG] DEER CREEK some six miles farther South) was set aside for Burial-purposes, by its Pioneer Day Occupants in the early 1840's; And on April 12, 1861, Josiah W. Thomas issued a Formal Deed (To Trustees). The first person known to have been buried here was [Col.?] William Scott's son Winfield SCOTT, aged about 20, who died on April 16, 1843, and was buried in the n.w. portion of the [present] cemetery. But there may have been still earlier interments to graves which (today at least) are unmarked. Fieldwork for the ensuing record was done on OCT. 21, 1942 bY
